Herbs
Herbs are a natural product. They are gentle yet potent, powerful and effective. They have been successfully used for centuries when there was no doctor or vet in every village and town. People had to take more responsibility for their own health and their animals health and great knowledge and wisdom was passed down the generations to make this possible.
Horses are herbivores. Their natural environment would provide natural foliage to graze and pick at to maintain physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, which they select by instinct. Those plants containing the essential nutrients a horse or pony requires. Seasonal plants and herbs from pasture and hedgerows provide them with both nutritional and health benefitting support, providing they are available. When we remove the horse from its natural habitat, we remove the availability in their diet of those varieties of grasses, plants and herbs and are also often absent from their pasture or modern hedgerows, due to overgrazing and chemical sprays, meaning essential nutrients are missing from the diet to maintain a healthy natural balance.
We can assist the horse by feeding natural food and herbs with the natural properties and constituents that will support the horses good health, happiness, vitality and performance, whether hacking or top level competition horse.
Herbs will aid the body to good health and help to maintain it. The best way to feed herbs is fresh, available for a large part of the year spring to late autumn, from a huge natures treasure chest. Dried herbs are an excellent more convenient alternative. The correct herbs used with a knowledge of the correct combinations, is where our products do the job for you, making your life much easier. Herbs help the body holistically. There are certain herbs for specific jobs but many herbs do more than one job.
Horses instinctively know what they need if left to forage for themselves if it is available. If the correct part of the plant is used and not diluted with “fillers”, the effects are more efficient. The herbs have little or no side effects.
Formulated to work as quickly as possible and effectively with less possible cause of side effects or over loading the organs in the body, avoiding toxicity.
The products are 100% pure herbs with no added fillers, mixers or binders added - hence the need for only a small scoop ( 15ml supplied). Most of the products at 500gms are to provide one course for one horse lasting approximately 5 to 6 weeks, added to damp feed, or can be mixed with water or a little light oil (such as sunflower oil) in a syringe and given orally. Larger sizes, 1kg to 5kg's are now available for bigger yards and horses needing long term use.
Herbal products can be made up especially to suit your horses requirements. Sometimes, 'one size does not fit all. We offer a bespoke service where necessary.
A huge aspect of any health program or health issues we believe is a holistic approach. Diet plays a major part. The majority of problems whether health, temperament, behavioural or performance start in the gut. The digestive system is inextricably linked to the immune system. Some herbal products are specifically for digestive issues.
Historically problems and dis-ease rapidly increased in the 60's due to the rapid introduction of processed 'convenience' foods. These processed foods can cause so much congestion, toxic overload and high protein content, putting a huge burden on the horses digestive organs and body systems; and the problem is no better today with the added chemicals, factory byproducts, GM ingredients, soya, mould inhibitors, preservatives, marketing and current fashions, such as excess oils.
There is information on the herb pages of this website regarding feeding a natural clean diet - 'straights', which can apply to almost all horses, with just the quantities adjusted to the individual horse, following the old golden rule of feed according to his / her workload, regime, condition, type and age.
